(FULL!) – University without Walls Explores Strategies for Aging Well: Ask Dr. Mia

April 11, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

THIS CLASS IS FULL!

Watch for future class offerings.

Join us as we explore aging from multiple perspectives. Our primary resource will be the podcast Ask Dr. Mia: Conversations on Aging Well by Fellowship member Mia Yang. Dr. Yang, who graduated from the UNC School of Medicine and completed a residency in geriatrics at John Hopkins University, is on the faculty of the Wake Forest School of Medicine.

The class will be led by people with doctoral degrees in three different disciplines. We’re not going to be lecturing, of course, but we can add insights when issues/questions are raised. When we put these different perspectives together with all the personal and other professional experiences participants have… well, we think discussions are going to be fascinating.

We’ll listen to the podcasts and come together to discuss a range of issues, including memory and cognitive issues, finding appropriate levels of care, holistic approaches to pain control, family caregiving, and maximizing quality of life. Participants are encouraged to share personal, familial, and work-related insights on issues addressed in the podcasts as well as raise questions for the group. Dr. Yang will join us for our final session.

Discussion facilitators are Donna Von Bargen and Eleanor Stoller. Dr. Von Bargen is a psychologist with a specialty in families and children. She graduated from the U. of Manitoba and had practices in Atlanta, Wichita, KS, and the Puget Sound area, WA. She grew up in small towns in Manitoba and NW Ontario, and was the first person in her family to go to college. Dr. Stoller is a sociologist who specialized in gerontology. Before retiring, she was the Selah Chamberlain Professor of Sociology and Associate Director of the Center on Aging and Health at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. She graduated from Grinnell College with a major in American Studies and completed her graduate work at Washington University (St. Louis).

Discussions will begin on March 14 from 1 to 2 (or 2:30pm if we need more time for discussion) and continue for 7 consecutive Tuesdays. Please feel free to join us even if you can’t fit all 7 meetings in your calendar (we’re all busy people).

Register soon to learn which podcasts we will discuss at each session. Transcripts of each podcast can be downloaded from Dr. Mia’s website, Ask Dr. Mia: Conversations on Aging Well (miayangmd.com) for those who prefer to read rather than listen. Closed captions will be on for our discussions. Registration deadline is March 12.
