Winston-Salem NC’s own sonic artists, The Versatiles, originally formed in 1965 with six members, eventually growing to nine, and were the only band in Winston-Salem at that time to include both black and white musicians. The band was extremely popular early on, playing country clubs, proms, school events, the Dixie Classic Fair, private parties and local entertainment venues.
Recently, The Versatiles have performed at Cobblestone Market, Marguerite’s Coffeehouse, Childress Winery and The Roar. The band remains diverse with a range of ages, and still totals nine members, all from Winston-Salem.
The band plays a variety of smooth jazz, R&B, beach and rock. Hits by Dave Brubeck, Herbie Hancock, Grover Washington, The Temptations, Otis Redding, The Average White Band, Stevie Wonder, Chicago, Maze and others will have you toe tapping, swaying to the beat, on your feet — and maybe even dancing!
DALE COLE’S UNIVERSAL JAM, WITH “COUNTRY DAN” COLLINS — Immediately after the Coffeehouse, please stay for Dale Cole’s Universal Jam! This month’s guest is Dan Collins, a retired sportswriter for the Winston-Salem Journal. Dan is a published author and gifted singer songwriter. In 2019, he released a CD of original songs titled “CDC: A Lifetime In The Making.”
Dan infuses his lyrics with wit and issues pertaining to the American South. He once hosted a long-running open mic series at the Muddy Creek Cafe. He continues his labor of love at Wise Man Brewing in Winston-Salem’s entertainment district every Wednesday night from 7 – 10 PM. “Country Dan” is known and loved by the Winston-Salem music family. He has a passion for helping younger musicians and new musicians moving to our community.
