THIS WEEK’S TOPIC

“The Gifts of Religious Naturalism, Part 2”

Religious Naturalism has been developed over the last thirty years and seeks to integrate spirituality and science. As a perspective on life, it is deeply compatible with Unitarian Universalism.

Last week I shared some basic ideas from Loyal Rue, one of the important writers in the field of religious naturalism. This week I will focus on the work of the biologist Ursula Goodenough, another important writer in the field of religious naturalism.

In our highly fragmented society, an understanding of life which unifies people is needed. Religious naturalism provides a fascinating and compelling way of giving us a common story, a way of seeing ourselves as part of something much greater than ourselves – without losing the awareness that what we do and say as individuals matters.

My remarks will be grounded in the seventh principle of the Unitarian Universalism: “Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.”

Additionally, I will draw from two primary sources which UU congregations affirm and promote:

Direct experience of … transcending mystery and wonder
Spiritual teachings of Earth-centered traditions

Speaker:  Rev. Ed Brock
