The Levant—the eastern coast of the Mediterranean currently ruled by Syria, Lebanon, and Israel— has suffered the effects of political instability and violence for over a century. Rather than argue amongst ourselves over who to blame, let’s try to better understand why state building in this region has been so difficult. To do that we need to examine the region’s ethnography and history as well as the role of states outside the region in fostering regional divisions.
Our presenter will be historian Dr. Gloria Fitzgibbon, who has benefited from many conversations with her son and former UUFWS member, Dr. Geoffrey Hughes, an anthropologist who studies Jordan and the political anthropology of the state.
