Our Religious Education program (or RE, as we call it) offers a hands-on, hearts-on approach to Sunday School. We utilize a fun mix of engaging activities that support learning and living our UU principles.
All children and youth, regardless of age, should be registered for Religious Education in order to participate. Registration and classes are FREE. We ask visitors and guests to please register children after their third visit to a Religious Education (RE) class.
Infants – 3 Year Olds: Nursery, Murray Room
Our youngest children are cared for by our dedicated Nursery Staff, Ashley, and an assistant. The nursery is open at 9am.
Our 4-5 year old class will have loving support as they begin to explore their faith community. Leaders will introduce the Principles of Unitarian Universalism and help the young ones put our principles into action. The class will spend time outside and have the chance to self-select some of their activities each week. This class begins in the Worship Service at 11:00am and the children are dismissed to class after the story.
1st-5th Grade: A Playful Spirit, Emerson Thoreau Rooms
Adapted from the Spirit Play program which uses the Montessori method, our “Playful Spirit” class will explore stories from Unitarian Universalism using hands-on materials and manipulatives, art supplies, and wonder. Leaders will affirm and encourage children as they engage with the materials and stories. This class begins in the Worship Service at 11:00am and the children are dismissed to class after the story.
6th-8th Grade: Coming of Age, Anthony Room
Middle school is a unique time for our children – and we offer a unique program which supports their transition from children to youth. The Coming of Age program incorporates many components:
Some of the youth may not be interested in participating in the ‘extra’ opportunities that the Coming of Age program offers– that is ok. All middle school youth will benefit from the classroom discussions which include topics such as Exploring Values, Why Bad Things Happen, and Faith. This class begins at 11m.
Senior high youth have the choice to participate in Youth Caucus, attend Worship Services or serve in a lay leadership role on Sunday mornings. Youth Caucus offers a casual opportunity for: facilitated discussion on current and relevant topics; social justice participation; and, sometimes, playing games and watching movies. Lay leadership opportunities include assisting with the PreK-K Religious Education class or serving as an Usher, Sound System Operator, Kitchen Elf, or Office Assistant. Training is offered – and sometimes required – for these roles. Contact the Director of Religious Education if interested. High School youth with musical skill and interest may also talk with our Music Director, Mignon Dobbins about joining the Choir.
There are also a few Sundays when the Minister, Worship, and Religious Education Team will design a Worship Service to be specifically appealing to or inclusive of our children. During Intergenerational Worship Services, children often have the opportunity to play an integral role in crafting our worship experience.
