Gayle Tuch, Clean and White: A History of Environmental Racism in the United States - Clean and White offers a history of environmental racism in the United States focusing on constructions of race and hygiene. In the wake of the civil war, as the nation encountered emancipation, mass immigration, and the growth of an urbanized society, Americans began to conflate the ideas of race and waste. Meanwhile, toxins were not addressed but industry/manufacturers were not in the more affluent areas, thus affecting people of color and immigrants more.

Care Committee expanding efforts - Join us after service September 22. Care has traditionally sent cards, made visits, shared occasional meals, and provided flowers when someone dies. We recently began a Lay Ministry component to our services. Now we are seeking to expand our efforts. We need more UU participants to help us with additional services such as transportation for members. We seek your input on ideas for services to provide, more convenient meeting times and communication methods. Lunch and childcare provided.

The topic this month is buildings and cities. At this monthly discussion group we explore solutions to reduce carbon emissions and heal the planet! How we can transform our practices and personal behaviors to drawndown the amount of carbon in our atmosphere? We'll be using the book: "Drawdown: The Most Comprehensive Plan Ever Proposed to Reverse Global Warming," edited by Paul Hawken. Bring your friends. The public is welcome. Sue and Rich Freeman, Hiking the Camino de Santiago across Spain - This ancient Christian pilgrimage route runs across northern Spain and draws hikers from across the globe. Rich & Sue Freeman spent a month immersed in the culture of the Camino, hiking from Pamplona to Finisterre on the Atlantic Ocean. They will show slides and tell fun stories!
