Aging Well: Expanding Horizons Launches First Course

May 4 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, repeating until May 26, 2021

Course Title : The Nordic Theory of Everything: In Search of a Better Life - Why are Scandinavians happier, healthier, and more secure than Americans, despite living in what’s often described as a “socialist icebox?” How do Nordic entrepreneurs thrive in a system that mixes high-tech capitalism with extensive welfare benefits? We’ll explore answers to these and other questions from the perspective of Anu Partanen, a Finnish journalist who moved to New York City with her American husband, before moving back to Helsinki after the couple became parents. We’ll use her book The Nordic Theory of Everything: In Search of a Better Life (Harper Collins, 2016) as background reading for our comparison of the way Finns and Americans experience marriage, childrearing, work and education, medical care, and social life. In the process, we’ll discover what the US could learn from Finland and the Scandinavian countries and what obstacles might exist to incorporating these lessons into life in the U.S. Used copies of Partanen’s book are available for under $10 (including shipping) from both Amazon and Alibris. Interviews with the author are also available on the Internet. Contact Co-Facilitators Mike and Eleanor Stoller with questions. Next week’s announcement will include a registration link.

What is a ZoomLuck Potluck, you ask? Well, we will all have dinner in our own place, but with a Zoom connection to the group. However, rather than try to have 40 people sharing airtime, we will be randomly placed in small conversation groups of 4 – 8 people. After about 30 minutes the groups will be shuffled again, so we will all have a chance to visit with many people. Please register and the Zoom link will be emailed to you. https://uufws.org/virtual3-firstfriday-potluck-2021

January 2023

Sunday Worship Service

January 15, 2023 @ 10:30 am - 11:30 am

"The Serenity Prayer, Part 3" - In the first in a series of sermons on the Serenity Prayer, I spoke about a relative who could not let go of many things. This habit of holding on to what he could not change or control led to many negative consequences in his relationships and life trajectory. In my second sermon, I talked about a man who had held on to regret and guilt to the point it controlled his life. However, unlike the person in the first sermon, he found a way to let go of what he could not change. Furthermore, he found a way to move toward actions that would be healing for himself and those who had been hurt by his actions. Finally, he summed the courage to act – to walk toward the unknown.  In my final sermon in this series, I will talk about two people who followed the prayer's wisdom to an extraordinary degree. Their lives show us the relevance, power, and importance of the Serenity Prayer. This sermon series reflects a progression from zero to full recognition of the Serenity Prayer's wisdom.  The examples I use in all my sermons are extreme cases. But that fact makes them excellent teachers to illuminate the wisdom of the Serenity Prayer for all of us. I look forward to continuing and concluding my sermon series on the wisdom of the Serenity Prayer.  Speaker:  Rev. Ed Brock, Worship Leader:  Emily Huneycutt
