On June 19, 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was enacted, Union troops arrived in TX to announce and enforce the freedom of all Black people, who were still being enslaved. Today, we celebrate the freedom that has arrived – and commit to bringing about the freedom that has yet to come.
